The Suffering of the Jewish
During the holocaust thousands of people died because they were Jewish. Hitler (runner of Germany) didn't like any Jewish people. So he wanted to kill all of the Jewish just because of their religion. During that time many events happened. The three events that happened during the holocaust were Operation Torch, the Warsaw Ghetto uprising, and the Salonika Ghetto was established.

Operation Torch happened on November 8, 1942. It was important because it was the first step for the US in the invasion of the Nazis. The Warsaw Ghetto uprising happened on April 19 through May 16, 1943. It was important because it was the longest lasting Jewish uprising. The Salonika Ghetto was established in May 1940 and it was important because it shows the racism shown by the Nazis at that time.

Operation Torch started in November 8, 1942. It was the invasion of the French North Africa by the British and Americans in World War II. It began when the Soviet Union pressed the United States and Britain to start operations in Europe, which would reduce the pressure of German forces on the Russian troops. An attack on French North Africa was proposed, which would clear the Axis Powers from North Africa. Then improve naval control of the Mediterranean Sea and prepare an invasion of Southern Europe in 1943. US President Frank D. Roosevelt suspected the African operation would disable any invasion of Europe in 1943 but agreed to support British Prime Minister Winston Churchill. (Wales)

Allies planned to invade lands of the Vichy French government. The Allies believed that the Vichy French forces would not fight because of information from an American consul in Algiers. The Allies wanted their cooperation instead of resistance. However, They had suspicions about a grudge being held against them and feared the French would not help them. The Allies intended to attach the German forces from the back at Tunisia. They needed the Vichy French on their side. (Wales)

Before the allies could form an attack, they needed to know the feelings of the Vichy French forces. They needed to know if they would support the invasion so they send Murphy to contact French officers. The French commander-in-chief in Algiers was willing to support the Allies, but requested a conference with a senior Allied General in Algeria. When the officers met, they decided to become our allies. We then had the required forces to defeat the Germen at Tunisia. (Stevenson)

The other event that happened during the holocaust was the Salonika Ghetto was established. The German occupation of Poland considered the Poles to be racially inferior. Following the military defeat of Poland by Germany in September 1939, the Germans launched a campaign. The German police units shot thousands of polish civilians. They also required all polish men to do force labor. (Deliso)

The Nazis sought to destroy polish culture by eliminating the polish political, religious, and intellectual leadership. This was done in part because of German contempt for polish culture and in part to prevent resistance against the occupation. Germans planned to eliminate the polish leadership class. The aim was to kill polish leaders with great speed. This would give them fear for the general population that would discourage resistance. (Advent)

The Nazis conducted greater measures against populations in areas where resistance was encountered. This included mass explosions. The Germans expelled over 100,000 people to camps like Auschwitz and Majdanek. Polish children were subjected to “Germanization” policies. Hitler ordered the “Germanization” of polish territory. Nazi governors expelled hundreds of thousands of poles from their homes in the general government. More than 500,000 ethnic Germans were then settled in these areas. (Deliso)

Another event that happened during the holocaust was the Warsaw Ghetto uprising. It first started with the Jewish Fighting Organization. They were then joined by the remaining ghetto population and turned out to be the longest lasting Jewish uprising ever. The revolt was a symbol of the determination of humans. The leader of the Jewish Fighting Organization was Modecai Anielewicz. He wanted Germans to pay for the Jewish people that got killed. He led an attack on a group of Jews who were being marched to the Umschlagplatz. This was the first attack on Germans in the ghetto and it was attributed to Jewish resistance. (Vashem)

This act led to a change in the attitude of ghetto population. They went from being compliant to resistant. When German forces heard this, they quickly came up with a plan to destroy the ghetto in three days. They feared the rebellion would spread to the polish side of the city. When the German army entered the ghetto they were attacked and they retreated. This gave the Jews hope to succeed. When Germans knew this, they decided to change their tactics so they would drive Jews into a small area. (Vashem)

On the second day of the uprising, 22 Germans were killed. On the third day, Germans set the ghetto on fire. Jews were burned alive or suffocated by the smoke. Only a group of fighters escaped through the sewers. The battle went on for 27 days. The German leader declared to have killed all of the Jews but still hundreds were living in the ruin of the ghetto. Word got out to the polish about the uprising and they gained hope for the future as well. (Vashem)

The three events I have talked about that have happened during the holocaust were Operation Torch, the Warsaw Ghetto uprising, and the Salonika Ghetto was established. Operation Torch was important because it was the first step for the US in the invasion of the Nazis. The Warsaw Ghetto uprising is important because it was the longest lasting Jewish uprising. The Salonika Ghetto is important because it was the longest lasting Jewish uprising. The Salonika Ghetto is important because it shows the racism shown by the Nazis at that time. The event that was the most horrible of all the events was the Warsaw Ghetto uprising. It was the most horrible event because the Jews were burned alive or suffocated by the smoke and that battle went for 27 days.
